Household planning

Shared Expenses Calculator: Couples and Household Groups

Compare two-person splits or allocate bills among 3–8 people using equal shares, incomes or agreed weights. Separate reimbursements from unpaid supplier bills.

Two people

Use net income and all costs for the same period, such as one month. Enter amounts without thousands separators; a point or comma marks decimals only.

Changing currency relabels values; it does not convert them.

Two-person comparison

What the numbers mean

A target contribution is the share of the full bill total under one chosen method. Money already paid is credited against that share; it does not reduce the original cost or get subtracted twice. A reimbursement between people is shown separately from money still owed to providers.

Equal remaining money starts after each person's listed personal commitments. A negative share means the formula would transfer personal money beyond sharing the bills. A negative remaining balance means this plan is underfunded. Neither result is labelled fair or made feasible by silently changing the formula.

Questions about shared bills

Does this decide which split is fair?

No. These are three comparison methods, not a legal rule or an ownership decision. Agree which bills and personal commitments belong in the comparison and review the arrangement when circumstances change.

What if some bills are only partly paid?

Enter the full bill and the amount each person has already paid. The result separates reimbursements from the remaining provider payments, so both parts still add up correctly. Do not enter a transfer between yourselves as a second provider payment.

Household group

Agree the cost shares

Each bill allocates its full cost only among its included people, using equal shares, their same-period net incomes or agreed relative weights. Methods can differ by bill. Group equal-remaining-money is not offered; the separate two-person comparison retains it.

Credit actual supplier payments

Anyone in the roster may have paid a supplier, including someone excluded from that bill’s cost. Contribution minus supplier payments is outstanding: negative means a reimbursement credit, positive a remaining contribution. Do not record an internal reimbursement as another supplier payment.

Keep the external unpaid amount separate

The plan matches positive outstanding amounts to reimbursement credits in roster order. Any positive amount left is suggested supplier funding. Each bill’s unpaid balance remains visible. Allocations, supplier payments, reimbursements and remaining funding reconcile in exact accounting units; no bank transfer is executed.

Check personal capacity and timing

Leftover equals net income minus personal commitments minus the full allocated contribution. Negative leftovers and the household shortfall remain visible; paid amounts are not extra income. This period calculation does not verify cash on a bill date. Use the cash-flow planner for entered receipt and outflow dates.

Shared expenses

Does this decide which split is fair?

No. Choose and agree participants, shared costs and weights yourselves. These comparisons do not determine ownership, contractual liability or a national sharing rule.

Can an excluded person still have paid a bill?

Yes. Their cost share is zero but their actual supplier payment is credited. Reimbursements between people and money still owed to suppliers remain separate; a suggested plan is not a completed payment.

Is this an ongoing shared account?

No. It calculates one entered period in page memory, without automatic carryover, invitations or account syncing. Edits require a fresh calculation. A chosen CSV downloads the applied snapshot locally.

Check the timing before payday

The monthly split does not ensure the paying account is funded on the bill date. Check current cash and unpaid commitments separately.
